Therapy for People Who Cannot Visualise
One of the most frustrating experiences for many people with aphantasia is being told to:
- Picture a peaceful place
- Visualise success
- Imagine a relaxing scene
- See yourself achieving your goals
If you have aphantasia, these instructions can feel confusing, frustrating or simply impossible.
You may understand the words perfectly well but experience little or no visual imagery.
The good news is that effective therapy does not require visualisation.
There are many other ways to create meaningful change.

What Is Aphantasia?
Aphantasia is the inability or reduced ability to create voluntary mental images.
When asked to imagine a beach, a familiar face or a future event, some people can generate vivid mental pictures.
Others cannot.
Neither experience is right or wrong.
They are simply different ways of processing information.
The Problem with Visualisation-Based Therapy
Visualisation can be useful for some people.
However, it is often treated as though it is the only route to personal change.
This can leave people with aphantasia feeling:
- Excluded
- Confused
- Frustrated
- Broken
- Different
In reality, visual imagery is only one of many ways the mind processes experience.
Therapy can be highly effective without it.
I Have Aphantasia Myself
I have aphantasia myself.
For many years I assumed everybody experienced thought in the same way I did.
It was only later that I discovered many people could genuinely create vivid mental pictures while others could not.
This personal experience has given me a particular interest in helping people who feel misunderstood by traditional visualisation-based approaches.
You do not need to explain what aphantasia is or justify your experience.
I already understand the basics because I live with it too.
Therapy Is About More Than Mental Pictures
Positive change can occur through:
- Awareness
- Language
- Meaning
- Beliefs
- Emotions
- Behaviour
- Attention
- Internal dialogue
None of these depend upon visual imagery.
Many people with aphantasia are surprised to discover how effective therapy can be when it is adapted to suit the way they naturally think.
Approaches That May Be Helpful
Depending upon your goals, sessions may involve:
Coaching
Developing clarity, confidence, direction and practical strategies with life coaching.
NLP
Exploring patterns of thought, language and behaviour through NLP.
Hypnotherapy
Using focused attention and suggestion without requiring visual imagery.
Awareness Training
Understanding how your mind operates and learning to work with it rather than against it.
Common Reasons People Seek Support
Anxiety
Reducing excessive worry, stress, anxiety and mental overload.
Confidence
Building self-belief and overcoming self-doubt.
Overthinking
Breaking repetitive patterns of thinking that create frustration and indecision and control your overthinking.
Habits and Addictions
Addressing behaviours that no longer serve you.
Performance
Improving focus, confidence and consistency in sport, business and everyday life.
Personal Development
Developing a deeper understanding of yourself and your unique cognitive style.
You Do Not Need to Think Like Everyone Else
Many people spend years trying to force themselves to use techniques that were designed for different minds.
Aphantasia does not mean you are missing something important.
It simply means your mind processes information differently.
Once you understand that difference, many things begin to make much more sense.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can therapy work if I cannot visualise?
Yes. Effective therapy does not depend solely on visual imagery. Many people with aphantasia benefit from coaching, NLP and hypnotherapy approaches that focus on thoughts, emotions, behaviour and awareness.
Do all therapists use visualisation?
No. While some therapists rely heavily on imagery, many approaches can be adapted to suit different thinking styles.
Can people with aphantasia be hypnotised?
Yes. Aphantasia does not prevent hypnosis. Many people experience hypnosis through attention, awareness, language and feelings rather than mental pictures.
Why do visualisation exercises feel difficult?
People with aphantasia often understand visualisation instructions conceptually but do not experience the mental images that others describe.
Does aphantasia affect personal development?
Not necessarily. Many people with aphantasia experience significant personal growth, confidence and success using approaches that suit their natural cognitive style.
Do you have aphantasia yourself?
Yes. I have aphantasia myself, which gives me a personal understanding of many of the challenges and misconceptions people encounter.
Is aphantasia a disorder?
No. Aphantasia is generally considered a variation in cognitive experience rather than a mental health condition or disorder.
Can therapy help with confidence and anxiety?
Yes. Confidence, anxiety, overthinking and self-esteem are among the most common reasons people seek support.
Are online sessions available?
Yes. Sessions are available online throughout Central London, the UK and internationally.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on your goals and circumstances. Some people notice meaningful improvements within a few sessions, while others choose longer-term support for personal development and performance.
