Hypnotherapy, NLP and Coaching for Confidence and Self-Esteem
Low confidence can affect almost every part of life. You may hold back at work, avoid opportunities, struggle to speak up, compare yourself with other people or feel that you are not good enough. Sometimes the difficulty is general; at other times you may feel capable in one area and deeply uncertain in another.
I offer personalised hypnotherapy, NLP and mindset coaching for confidence and self-esteem in Central London, Reading and Didcot, as well as online. The aim is not to make you arrogant or create a false performance. It is to help you recognise your value, trust your abilities and respond to challenges with greater calm and flexibility.

Does Any of This Sound Familiar?
- You doubt yourself even when you have the necessary experience or ability.
- You worry excessively about what other people think.
- You avoid speaking up, setting boundaries or asking for what you need.
- Interviews, presentations, meetings or social situations make you anxious.
- You dismiss successes but remember mistakes for years.
- Your inner voice is critical, perfectionistic or unforgiving.
- You procrastinate because failure—or even success—feels uncomfortable.
- You want to feel more competent, worthy, assertive and emotionally steady.
Confidence is not one fixed quality that you either possess or lack. It is a collection of beliefs, expectations, emotional responses and learned behaviours. Because those patterns are learned, they can also change.
Confidence and Self-Esteem Are Connected—but Different
Confidence usually describes your belief that you can handle a particular task or situation. Self-esteem is broader: it concerns your sense of personal worth and how you relate to yourself. You might be confident professionally but feel unworthy in relationships, or have healthy self-respect while lacking confidence in public speaking.
Understanding the difference helps us target the right issue. Skills and preparation may strengthen task-specific confidence. Deeper work may be useful when a persistent sense of not being good enough colours many areas of life. See the self-esteem page for more detail.
Why Confidence Difficulties Can Continue
Criticism, bullying, rejection, difficult relationships, past failures or messages absorbed early in life can shape what you expect from yourself. Sometimes other people’s opinions become an internal voice that keeps repeating long after the original situation has ended. You may then approach new opportunities as though the past is about to repeat itself.
Avoidance can reinforce the problem. Turning down an opportunity gives immediate relief, but you lose the chance to discover that you could cope. Perfectionism can have a similar effect: if only flawless performance counts, ordinary learning feels like failure. Anxiety may intensify physical sensations and self-monitoring, making capable people feel less competent than they are. If this is a major part of your experience, read about anxiety.
How Hypnotherapy, NLP and Coaching May Help
Hypnotherapy uses focused attention and relaxation to help you engage with useful suggestions and change automatic responses. NLP and coaching techniques can help you examine the meaning you give to past events, notice unhelpful thinking habits and practise responding differently. Positive psychology can add a practical focus on strengths, values, resilience and actions that support wellbeing.
When an earlier experience remains influential, we may explore it and help you view it from a different perspective. Work will also focus on the present and future: how you want to think, feel and act in the situations that matter now. Sessions are personalised and do not rely on a standard script.
You do not have to visualise vividly. Techniques can be adapted around language, sensations, sounds, concepts or however your mind naturally works. The goal is not forced positive thinking; it is a more balanced view of yourself, with less automatic fear and self-criticism.
Areas We Can Work On
- Negative self-talk: recognising harsh internal commentary and developing a more useful response.
- Fear of judgement: shifting attention towards the task or conversation rather than imagined opinions.
- Past setbacks: learning from them without treating them as predictions of the future.
- Assertiveness: expressing needs, opinions and boundaries with respect.
- Emotional control: recovering more quickly when something does not go to plan.
- Motivation: taking manageable action instead of waiting to feel completely ready.
- Performance: allowing preparation and ability to emerge under pressure.
Confidence for Work, Social Life and Performance
Confidence work can be adapted to interviews, career progression, leadership, dating, relationships, sport, study or creative performance. If speaking in front of others is the main concern, see fear of public speaking. If being watched or judged affects many interactions, the social anxiety page may be more relevant.
Highly capable people can also feel fraudulent despite clear evidence of achievement. This is often described as imposter syndrome. Others feel confident until the stakes rise, when performance anxiety interferes with natural skill. Identifying the specific pattern helps us choose a useful direction.
What Progress May Look Like
Change may initially feel subtle. You might make a decision with less overthinking, contribute an idea, accept a compliment, set a boundary or recover from a mistake without days of criticism. As these experiences accumulate, confidence becomes evidence-based rather than something you have to pretend. The aim is to feel capable of coping—not certain that everything will always be easy.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
This depends on your goals, history and whether the difficulty is specific or general. Some people notice useful changes within a few sessions; broader confidence and self-esteem work may take longer. We will review progress and adapt the approach. No responsible therapist can guarantee a particular result.
